Set against the battlefield and expressed through the trials of a soldier in battle, The Song of God lays out paths to living a good life.

John Gilbert, philosopher, and military linguist tells a story of balancing good and evil within the experience of being at war.

About The Song of God

The Song of God expresses the lessons of the Bhagavad Gita through the trials and experiences of a combat soldier. It sets forth a dialogue between two men in battle, one the seeker of knowlege, the other as the speaker of truths.

The story dives into three kinds of faith: light, darkness, and chaos. It leans into the understanding that nothing is ever destroyed and the eternal, forever changeless nature or God.

Kathleen’s Honest Review

If you are looking for a literary work to spark your spiritual reflection, start with The Song of God.

For those familiar with Bhagavad Gita this will likely be an enjoyable read. It presents a dialogue between two people—the teacher and the student.

Chris, the teacher, delivers his lessons through the lens of war and battle. AJ, the student, is the soldier in battle attempting to make sense of the events continuously unfolding around him. This story sets out to show the reader how to live a good life through gnosis.

The Song of God gave me a space to reflect on my own spiritual nature.

Kathleen’s Favorite Quote

“God rode into battle in an Abram’s tank…”

This statement of an unlikely scenario is the opening line of The Song of God and immediately drew me in. I wanted to know where this story was going and was eager to follow.

Book Cover Rating

Book Review: The Song of God by John Gilbert

The cover sets the reader up for the opening line of the story while also creating a sense of wonder.

The bright red behind the stark white title draws you into the ever-so-faint crosshairs of a gun sight. All this atop the image of a battle tank coming towards the reader trailing a cloud of smoke tells the reader they are about to embark into a war zone.

I was intrigued by the word “God” above the tank and wondered who was in the crosshairs, the reader or God.

Overall Score: B
